What we’re asking
Not instant answers. A dependable process.
For every long-term trail closure, the public should be able to find three things: clear information, visible progress, and a path to reopening.
A practical request
Make the status of a closed trail easy to find and easy to understand.
Rebuilding trails is complicated. Public communication does not need to be. A consistent closure update can distinguish what is known, what is underway, and what still needs to be decided.
We are asking North Carolina State Parks to establish a clear public standard for closures that extend beyond routine, short-term maintenance.
Three commitments
What every long-term closure update should answer

Clear information
Identify what is closed, why it is closed, when the closure began, and where visitors can find the latest official status.

Real progress
Describe assessments, funding, design, permitting, contracting, repairs, or other milestones as they are completed. When work is blocked, name the blocker.

A path to reopening
State what conditions must be met before reopening and when the closure will be reassessed. If phased or partial access is possible, explain how it will be considered.
What this could look like in practice
Visible milestones
A short list showing completed steps, the current stage, and the work that remains before the next decision.
One reliable source
A durable page for each significant closure so visitors do not have to piece together answers from signs, posts, and old notices.
What we are not asking for
We are not asking staff to reopen unsafe trails or promise dates before the facts support them. We are asking for clarity about the work and the next decision.
